Location and fees

If you want a garden which is filled with flowers not 'features', which will quite probably have a formal backbone, plenty of fine places to sit, might well have some fruit trees, plenty of nice things to smell and to cut, and which will follow the seasons rather than attempt 'colour the year round', that come to life in earliest March, and are still worth looking at as the hoar frost settles, then you already think of the sort of garden I like designing.

Gardens around old houses are always a delight to make, and the old houses I've owned have always acted as a spur to garden creativity.

I've also always liked gardens that have a sense of privacy and enclosure, with luxuriant plantings that sometime hover perilously on the verge of chaos.

Real gardening and real gardens take time. Ideally, I like to work on a garden over a year or two. For most gardens, it's only with a certain amount of study that the full potential of your site can be discovered. Ideas and plans gradually develop with increasing knowledge of the garden, making sure that you get something unique and special, and that matches your needs to the space you have.
