David and his partner Alec divide their time between four gardens - one in London, another in Lincolnshire, yet another in the Scottish Borders, and, much less often, one in the eastern outskirts of Edinburgh.  These, all fortunately modest in scale, contain, apart from far too many plants and quite a number of 'weeds', two conservatories, five pools, one greenhouse, and rather a number of ramshackle sheds, outhouses, compost heaps and the rest.  There is far too little grass.  There will soon be a '4 gardens' page to see here.

After various projects, he is once again writing articles for newspapers and magazines.  After rather a gap, he is also thinking of new book ideas.  2004 saw the appearance of three new books, the most recent two now previewed at length in Google Books - follow the links: DANGEROUS GARDEN , CLASSIC GARDEN PLANS, and the paperback edition of PLANTS THAT SHAPED OUR GARDENS.  DANGEROUS GARDEN was listed by DISCOVER magazine as one of the top 20 science books that appeared in 2004. It was also nominated for The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries Annual Award for a Significant Work in Botanical or Horticultural Literature, and for the 2005 National Academies Communication Awards.

At the moment, this site gives brief details of books, gardens, photography, and offers you many of my earlier newspaper and magazine articles. The site is slowly being developed to include around 600 published articles. It also now contains the text of some of my out-of-print books. First up is THE GARDEN TRIUMPHANT, a look at the delights and horrors of Victorian gardens and gardening. GEORGIAN GARDENS and PLANTING THE PERFECT GARDEN are next.  Please use the blog to let me know if you think there are things I could usefully add!
